Trump ally’s bill making Gulf of America permanent passes House

The House of Representatives voted on Friday morning to make President Donald Trump’s name change for the Gulf of America permanent. The bill, led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a vocal ally of Trump, did not receive any votes from Democrats, as expected.

During the debate on the bill, Greene emphasized the importance of the name change for the American people. She stated, “The American people deserve pride in their country and in the waters that we own and protect with our military and Coast Guard. All of the businesses that prosper along these waters also deserve recognition.”

However, Democratic lawmakers criticized the legislation as a waste of time. Rep. Steny Hoyer expressed his disappointment, saying, “Republicans think this juvenile legislation is the best use of this House’s time. I worry about families and communities in America that are struggling to get by.”

Despite the opposition from Democrats, the majority of Republicans supported the bill, arguing that the name change would boost tourism and patriotism in the region. Some GOP lawmakers, however, privately expressed frustration at what they saw as a symbolic bill taking precedence over more meaningful legislation to advance Trump’s agenda.

The bill will now be sent to the Senate, where it must reach a 60-vote threshold, including Democratic support, before it can be signed into law by the president.
