US Election 2024

Trump claims highest approval ever as polls show negative ratings persist

President Donald Trump boasted about his poll numbers while speaking with reporters on the White House lawn Wednesday. “My approval rating is the highest it’s ever been,” the president declared, citing a newly released national survey.

Despite Trump’s claims, his approval ratings have remained below water in most recent national polls conducted over the past three weeks. According to an average of the latest surveys, the president’s approval rating stands in the upper 40s, with his disapproval rating slightly above 50%.

In his second term, Trump has been assertive in wielding executive authority, reversing longstanding government policies and aiming to make significant cuts to the federal workforce through a series of controversial executive orders. These actions, some of which address grievances from his first term, have garnered attention and criticism.

One of the recent headlines involving Trump was his decision to deploy National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to Los Angeles to quell protests over ICE detentions and deportations of illegal migrants. Additionally, there were discussions about the U.S. joining Israel in attacking Iran’s nuclear program.

At the start of his second term, Trump had positive poll numbers, but they began to decline shortly after his late-January inauguration. His approval ratings dipped below water by early March and have since remained negative in most national surveys.

Former President Joe Biden, who served a single term between Trump’s two, enjoyed positive approval ratings in June 2021, five months into his presidency. However, Biden’s numbers turned negative later in the year due to criticism of his handling of the U.S. exit from Afghanistan, inflation, and a surge of migrants at the southern border with Mexico.

The political landscape remains dynamic, with approval ratings fluctuating based on current events and presidential actions. As the country continues to navigate through these challenges, the public’s perception of its leaders will undoubtedly shape the narrative moving forward.
