Trump DHS slams liberal NY Times for ‘sob stories’ about deported kidnapper

The Department of Homeland Security under the Trump administration has strongly criticized The New York Times for publishing what they called “sob stories” about deported criminal illegal immigrants while disregarding the victims of these criminals. One particular case that drew the department’s ire was that of Nascimento Blair, a 44-year-old Jamaican national who was deported by ICE on Feb. 27 after being convicted of kidnapping.

The New York Times published a detailed account of Blair’s story, portraying him as a “changed man” who had turned his life around and was seeking redemption. The outlet highlighted Blair’s efforts to rebuild his life, pursue education, and contribute to his community after serving time in prison for his crimes.

However, the Department of Homeland Security, through Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, criticized The Times for focusing on Blair’s narrative while ignoring the harm he had caused as a convicted kidnapper. McLaughlin questioned why the outlet continued to publish sympathetic stories about criminal illegal aliens without acknowledging the suffering of their victims.

According to ICE, Blair entered the U.S. in 2004 and was arrested a year later for first-degree kidnapping. He was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison, with an immigration judge ordering his removal from the country in 2008. Despite this order, Blair was allowed to remain in the U.S. after being released on parole in 2020.

ICE’s New York City field office eventually arrested Blair in 2025, leading to his deportation. McLaughlin credited President Trump and Secretary Noem for prioritizing the removal of dangerous criminals like Blair from the country. She emphasized that the administration was focused on arresting and deporting “the worst of the worst,” including convicted kidnappers, in order to restore common sense to the immigration system.

Despite reaching out to The New York Times for comment, Fox News Digital did not receive a response from the outlet. The incident underscores the ongoing debate over how the media portrays deported criminal illegal immigrants and the importance of acknowledging the victims of their crimes.
