Trump executive order about sex-change procedures for kids violates NY law: Letitia James

New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a warning to hospitals in the state, advising them not to comply with President Donald Trump’s recent executive order prohibiting sex-change procedures for minors. James argued that following the directive would violate state anti-discrimination laws.

Trump’s executive order, titled “Protecting Children From Chemical And Surgical Mutilation,” aims to restrict “chemical and surgical” sex-change procedures for minors. The order claims that medical professionals are harming and sterilizing children under the false belief that adults can change a child’s sex through irreversible medical interventions.

In response to the EO, James emphasized the importance of providing gender-affirming treatment to minors, stating that hospitals have an obligation to comply with New York State laws, regardless of federal funding availability.

The Greater New York Hospital Association is currently working to determine the legal and clinical implications of the executive order. Spokesperson Brian Conway stated that they are collaborating with hospitals to address the EO.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst for Fox News Channel, explained that the treatments discouraged under the EO include puberty blockers and sex reassignment surgery for minors. Siegel highlighted the potential long-term side effects of these treatments and emphasized the importance of mental health counseling for teens.

Siegel also raised concerns about the irreversible nature of sex-change procedures for minors and urged caution in making such decisions. He emphasized the need for thorough mental health evaluation and warned against pressure from external sources influencing a child’s decision.

The issue of gender-affirming care for minors remains a controversial and complex topic, with differing opinions on the appropriate course of action. James’ warning to hospitals reflects the ongoing debate surrounding this issue and the need to balance the well-being of minors with legal and ethical considerations.
