Trump FDA pick Makary confirmed in Senate

President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. Marty Makary, has been confirmed by the Senate, following a vote of 56-44. Makary, a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and former Fox News medical contributor, faced scrutiny during his confirmation process, particularly regarding the postponement of an FDA vaccine meeting.

During his hearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), Makary was questioned on various topics including vaccines, chronic illness, food safety, and abortion. One key issue raised was the FDA’s decision to postpone a vaccine advisory committee meeting, which Makary defended by pointing out that the Biden administration was responsible for scheduling such meetings.

Makary criticized the Biden administration for pushing through FDA approval for a COVID-19 booster without convening the advisory committee. He highlighted the importance of expert input in decision-making processes and pledged to reevaluate which topics require convening the advisory committee members.

In his previous writings, Makary has called for “fresh leadership” at the FDA to promote scientific advancement and address public health issues such as childhood obesity and early-onset Alzheimer’s. He emphasized the need for a shift towards healthier food choices to improve overall health outcomes.

As the newly confirmed head of the FDA, Makary will have the opportunity to shape the agency’s policies and priorities, focusing on advancing scientific research and promoting public health. His confirmation signals a new direction for the FDA under his leadership, with a renewed emphasis on evidence-based decision-making and addressing key health challenges facing the nation.
