Trump fires National Security Agency director, reassigns civilian deputy director

The recent dismissal of National Security Agency Director Gen. Timothy Haugh and civilian Deputy Director Wendy Noble by the Trump administration has caused quite a stir in Washington. The firings were first reported by The Washington Post, with Gen. Haugh also being removed from his position as commander of the U.S. Cyber Command.

According to reports, Deputy Director Wendy Noble has been reassigned to serve in the office of the undersecretary of defense for intelligence. This sudden shakeup in leadership has drawn reactions from top Democrats on the Senate and House intelligence committees.

Rep. Jim Himes, a ranking member on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, expressed his deep concern over Gen. Haugh’s dismissal. He described Haugh as an honest and forthright leader who prioritized national security. Himes called for an immediate explanation for the decision to remove Haugh from his position.

Sen. Mark Warner, the vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, also voiced his astonishment at Haugh’s firing. Warner highlighted Gen. Haugh’s decades of service to the country and questioned how his dismissal would make Americans safer in the face of increasing cyber threats.

Warner went on to criticize President Trump for firing a nonpartisan and experienced leader like Haugh while failing to hold accountable those responsible for leaking classified information. He accused the President of taking national security staffing advice from a discredited conspiracy theorist in the Oval Office.

The mention of far-right activist Laura Loomer in connection to the national security firings raised eyebrows, with Warner suggesting that Trump may have based his decisions on her guidance. However, Trump has denied Loomer’s involvement in the dismissals of NSC employees.
