Trump, GOP senators to huddle at Capitol, weigh strategy on budget, taxes and border
President-elect Trump is gearing up to meet with Senate Republicans on Wednesday as he prepares to take office for his second term at the end of the month. The meeting, confirmed by the Trump transition team, will take place in Washington, D.C., and will include Senate GOP leadership, among others.
Hosted by Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, chairwoman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, the meeting will focus on plans for a budget reconciliation bill, or possibly two, in the coming months. Trump has expressed his desire for a “one powerful Bill” to address key issues such as border security, energy, and tax cuts. This strategy would allow Republicans to bypass the Senate’s legislative filibuster and push through legislation with their conference’s support alone.
While Senate Majority Leader John Thune initially proposed two separate reconciliation bills, Trump has not ruled out this option. The goal is to deliver historic victories for the American people and make America great again. With the support of their conference, Republicans aim to unite and quickly pass legislation to benefit the country.
It remains unclear which GOP senators will attend the meeting with Trump, but senators like Thom Tillis and Bill Cassidy have expressed their intention to be present. Sen. Cassidy emphasized the importance of working together to pass a conservative, pro-American agenda.
As the meeting approaches, all eyes are on President-elect Trump and Senate Republicans as they strategize and collaborate on key legislative priorities. The meeting is a crucial step in setting the stage for a productive and impactful term ahead.
