In a recent interview with Fox News’ Mark Levin on “Life, Liberty & Levin”, Fox News senior strategic analyst and retired four-star Gen. Jack Keane highlighted President-elect Trump’s potential role in halting the reported Turkish destruction of the pro-U.S. Syrian Kurdish community. Keane emphasized that President Trump may hold the key to addressing the escalating situation, as he successfully dealt with Turkish President Erdoğan in the past to prevent similar actions through a phone conversation.
The Turkish government, led by President Erdoğan, has been targeting the Syrian Kurds in eastern Syria, posing a threat to the U.S.-supported community that played a crucial role in defeating ISIS. Keane noted that while President-elect Biden may not take immediate action, President Trump could leverage his relationship with Erdoğan to address the issue effectively.
Amidst concerns over potential ethnic cleansing and the plight of the Syrian Kurds, world leaders have called for unified action to protect the Kurdish forces. Senator Lindsey Graham and the Dutch Parliament have expressed their willingness to impose sanctions on Turkey if necessary to safeguard the Kurdish allies who helped in the fight against ISIS.
The Kurdish-led Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has issued calls for global support to protect the region from ongoing attacks by pro-Turkey forces. Meanwhile, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has reiterated the country’s stance on combatting PKK/YPG terrorism while distinguishing the Syrian Kurds from the designated terrorist organizations.
As the situation escalates, there are growing calls for the U.S. to take action and ensure the safety of the Syrian Kurds. Incoming freshman Rep. Abraham Hamadeh stressed the importance of alliances based on mutual respect and shared goals, urging Turkey to demonstrate its commitment to fighting terrorism.
While the U.S. State Department has not confirmed any plans for sanctions against Turkey, Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of U.S.-Turkish cooperation in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS mission during his recent meeting with Turkish officials. As the situation unfolds, the international community remains vigilant and prepared to address the escalating crisis in Syria.
