Trump picks former congressman Pete Hoekstra to be ambassador to Canada

President-elect Trump has selected former ambassador and Rep. Pete Hoekstra as his choice for the U.S. ambassador to Canada. Trump praised Hoekstra’s track record, stating that he is highly respected in Michigan, a state they won substantially. Hoekstra represented Michigan’s 2nd District in Congress for close to two decades and served as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Additionally, he played a crucial role in Trump’s campaign as Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party.

In a release on Wednesday evening, Trump expressed his confidence in Hoekstra to advance his “America First” agenda. He highlighted Hoekstra’s previous role as the United States Ambassador to the Netherlands during his first term, commending him for his outstanding performance.

Hoekstra’s experience extends beyond his diplomatic service. Prior to his ambassadorship, he spent 18 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represented Michigan’s 2nd District. He also held the positions of chairman and ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, showcasing his expertise in national security matters.

This announcement comes on the heels of Trump’s selection of former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker as the U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Describing Whitaker as a “strong warrior and loyal Patriot,” Trump expressed confidence in his ability to advocate for and defend U.S. interests within NATO.

As the new administration takes shape, Trump’s cabinet appointments are under scrutiny. Hoekstra’s nomination to the vital role of U.S. ambassador to Canada underscores the president-elect’s commitment to appointing individuals with a proven track record of service and dedication to the country.
