Trump returns to Iowa to launch America250 celebrations at fairgrounds

President Donald Trump is making a return to Iowa, but this time it’s not about the 2028 presidential election. Instead, Trump will be headlining a Fourth of July eve event at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines to kick off America250, a series of yearlong celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Longtime Iowa GOP chair Jeff Kaufmann expressed that it’s no surprise Trump chose Iowa to start the celebrations, given the special relationship he has with the state. Trump carried Iowa in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 presidential elections, making it a significant place for him. Kaufmann believes Trump’s choice to start in Iowa is symbolic and demonstrates his belief in the heartland.
Republican consultant Nicole Schlinger echoed Kaufmann’s sentiments, stating that it’s fitting for Trump to kick off America 250 in Iowa, as he has always had a connection with the state. Schlinger described Trump as straight-talking, hardworking, and proud of the country, just like Iowans.
Trump’s history with Iowa includes walking through the crowds at the state fair in 2015 and 2023, as well as holding rallies at the fairgrounds in the lead-up to the 2016 Iowa caucuses and again in 2021. The upcoming visit has also sparked speculation about the 2028 election, with “Trump 2028” merchandise available for purchase. However, Trump has made it clear that he will not be running for a third term, as the Constitution limits presidents to two terms.
Despite his denials of a 2028 run, Trump’s continued influence in the Republican Party has kept the spotlight on him, deterring any early moves by potential successors. While other Republican politicians have made stops in Iowa, such as Rand Paul, Rick Scott, Glenn Youngkin, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Vice President JD Vance is seen as a frontrunner for the 2028 race.
Looking ahead to the future, Kaufmann emphasized that Iowa is always ready for the challenge, with political activity happening year-round. As Trump prepares for the America250 celebrations, the focus remains on his presidency and the legacy he will leave for the next generation of Republican leaders.
