President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has decided to end the security detail provided to Dr. Anthony Fauci, which was funded by taxpayers. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) had requested security for Fauci in 2020 due to threats he received while serving as the top health official and public spokesperson during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the security detail was removed on Thursday night, as reported by CNN.
During a visit to Asheville, N.C. to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, Trump was questioned about the decision. He stated, “I think, you know, when you work for the government, at some point your security detail comes off and, you know, you can’t have them forever.” Trump added, “We took some off other people too, but you can’t have a security detail for the rest of your life because you work for the government.”
Prior to this decision, Trump had also revoked the security clearances of 51 intelligence officials who had made false claims about Hunter Biden’s laptop being linked to Russian disinformation. Additionally, security details were also removed from former national security advisor John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
As this is a developing story, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
