US Election 2024

Trump says Tillis refusing US attorney nomination ‘disappointing’ as deadline for left-wing court action looms

President Donald Trump expressed his disappointment over Republican North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis’ decision not to support his nominee for U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., Ed Martin. During a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump praised Martin’s talent and highlighted the significant decrease in street crime and violent crime in Washington, D.C. under Martin’s interim leadership.

Tillis, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee responsible for overseeing Martin’s confirmation process, announced his opposition to the nomination, throwing the process into uncertainty. With a May 20 deadline looming, the fate of Martin’s confirmation now rests in the hands of the committee composed of 12 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

In response to Tillis’ stance, Trump acknowledged the senator’s decision and emphasized the importance of senators following their conscience in making their voting decisions. Despite the setback, Trump expressed his support for Martin, citing his effective leadership in reducing crime rates in the nation’s capital.

With the possibility of an interim U.S. attorney being appointed by federal judges if Martin is not confirmed within 120 days, concerns have been raised about the involvement of left-leaning judges like Judge James Boasberg in the selection process. However, Tillis’ office clarified that Attorney General Pam Bondi could appoint an acting replacement, bypassing judicial interference.

Martin, a former defense attorney who represented individuals charged in the January 6 Capitol riot, has faced criticism from Tillis for his involvement in the controversial cases. Trump’s decision to grant clemency to over 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants further fueled the debate surrounding Martin’s nomination.

Despite the challenges, the Trump administration continues to advocate for Martin’s confirmation, emphasizing the urgency of his appointment in addressing pressing issues and ensuring the well-being of the American people. Trump’s call for Republican senators to support Martin underscores the importance of unity and cooperation in advancing the administration’s agenda.
