Trump setting up meeting with Putin, in communication with Xi

President-elect Donald Trump revealed on Thursday that his team is working on setting up meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump expressed his desire to meet with both leaders, stating, “He wants to meet. And we’re setting it up.” He also mentioned that he would rather wait until after his inauguration date later this month before finalizing the meetings.

Trump highlighted the need to address ongoing conflicts, particularly mentioning the high casualty rates in Ukraine and Russia. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and expressed his commitment to resolving issues through peaceful means. The Kremlin confirmed Trump’s comments and expressed readiness to engage in discussions to find solutions.

Gen. Keith Kellogg, the Trump-appointed special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, outlined his goal to end the war in Ukraine within 100 days of assuming his role. He described the conflict as “carnage” and expressed confidence in Trump’s ability to bring about a resolution in the near term. Kellogg emphasized the importance of a fair and equitable cease-fire agreement.

Regarding Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, Trump hinted at supporting Putin’s stance on preventing the country from joining the alliance. He acknowledged Putin’s concerns about NATO’s presence near Russia’s borders. However, both Moscow and Kyiv have indicated that Ukraine’s NATO membership is non-negotiable.

In terms of China, Trump did not provide specific details about a potential meeting with President Xi Jinping. While reports suggested that Xi had been invited to Trump’s inauguration, it was later confirmed that a top-level envoy would represent China instead. Trump’s recent statements about imposing tariffs on China and considering military action over the Panama Canal have raised concerns about escalating tensions.
