Trump takes swipe at Biden, says US will support Somalia against Houthis

President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to the Houthis, urging them to hide now that he has eliminated what he describes as “dangerous red tape” left behind by the Biden administration. Trump emphasized that U.S. troops are now empowered to protect Somalia from terrorists.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Time for the terrorists to hide, but it won’t do them any good. Our Warfighters, the Greatest the World has ever seen, will find them, and bring them to swift Justice.” He highlighted the removal of restrictions that hindered the military’s ability to combat threats, drawing parallels to the success achieved in the fight against ISIS under General Daniel Caine.
“We will support the Somali People in their efforts to end terrorism and bring prosperity to their Country by preventing the Houthis from embedding in Somalia,” Trump added.
The U.S. has a history of assisting Somali forces in combating extremist groups like al-Shabab and ISIS. Recent developments, such as Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud offering exclusive access to air bases and seaports to the U.S., have reignited tensions in the region.
In a leaked letter dated March 16, Somalia proposed granting the U.S. operational control over strategic locations to enhance American engagement in the area. This move has sparked concerns and raised questions about external influence and competition in the region.
Somaliland, a breakaway region seeking international recognition as an independent state, plays a crucial role in these discussions. With its own government and security forces, Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since maintained autonomy.
The situation in Somalia remains complex, with ongoing security challenges and geopolitical dynamics at play. Trump’s recent actions to empower the U.S. military in the region signal a renewed commitment to combating terrorism and promoting stability in Somalia.
As developments unfold, it is essential to monitor the evolving situation and assess the implications of these strategic moves in the Horn of Africa. Trump’s focus on eliminating obstacles to military operations underscores the importance of proactive measures in addressing security threats and advancing U.S. interests in the region.
In conclusion, the efforts to bolster security cooperation in Somalia reflect a broader strategy to enhance regional stability and counter terrorist threats. The evolving dynamics in the Horn of Africa underscore the need for proactive engagement and strategic partnerships to address complex security challenges effectively.
