Trump to rename Gulf of Mexico, Mount Denali on first day in office

President-elect Trump is gearing up to make some significant changes on his first day in office. According to incoming White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump will be signing executive orders to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Mount Denali to Mount McKinley.

The New York Post was the first to report on these executive actions, which are just a part of the many orders Trump plans to sign after being sworn in as President. The orders will direct the Secretary of the Interior to officially change the names on federal documents and maps, although it remains uncertain if schools will also be required to adopt the new terminology.

Trump has been vocal about his intentions to rename Mount Denali, citing that it was originally named after President William McKinley. He praised McKinley, calling him a “very good, maybe a great president” and emphasizing his success as a businessman and governor.

Former President Obama had changed the name of the mountain to Denali in 2015 at the request of the Alaska legislature. However, Trump is looking to revert back to the original name in honor of McKinley’s legacy.

In addition to these renaming orders, Trump is set to sign around 200 executive orders on his first day in office. These orders will focus on immigration policies and scaling back Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

The overarching theme of Trump’s Day One actions, as per incoming administration officials, is “promises made, promises kept.” The goal is to deliver on the pledges made to the American people and kick off what Leavitt refers to as the “Golden Age of America” as soon as Trump takes the Oath to the United States Constitution.
