Trump to sign executive order to protect Americans from ‘exploitive ticket scalping

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order aimed at protecting Americans from exploitive ticket scalping in the concert and entertainment industry. This executive order will direct the Federal Trade Commission to collaborate with the attorney general to enforce competition laws within the industry.

The order will specifically enforce the Better Online Ticket Sales (BOTS) act and encourage state consumer protection authorities to uphold its enforcement. Additionally, the order will promote price transparency throughout the ticket-purchasing process, including in the secondary ticketing market. It will also evaluate and potentially take enforcement action against unfair, deceptive, and anti-competitive practices in this market.

Furthermore, the executive order will mandate the attorney general and Treasury secretary to ensure that ticket scalpers are complying with the Internal Revenue Code and other relevant laws. Within 180 days, the Treasury Department, Department of Justice, and FTC will deliver a report outlining the actions taken to address unfair practices in the live concert and entertainment industry. This report will also recommend any necessary regulations or legislation to protect consumers.

This initiative comes after President Trump made a campaign promise to address high ticket prices, deeming the current system where fans are priced out as unfortunate. The executive order reflects the administration’s commitment to creating a fair and competitive environment within the entertainment industry.
