Trump train chugs past 2020 margins, particularly among Hispanics, urban Northeasterners
President-elect Donald Trump has secured victory in the 2024 election, with a significant boost in support from key voting blocs, particularly among Hispanics and Latinos. Surpassing expectations, Trump gained six points of support from Hispanics compared to the 2020 election, making Democrats only single-digit favorites among the bloc, according to data compiled by the Financial Times and other outlets.
One of Trump’s notable achievements was flipping Miami-Dade County in Florida, one of the largest Latino communities in the nation. He won the county by about 2% more than President Joe Biden did in 2020. Representative Carlos Gimenez, a Republican representing the southern half of Miami and the Keys, attributed this success to the shared values of Hispanics and the Republican Party. He emphasized that Hispanics are people of faith, family, hard work, and the pursuit of the American dream, values that align with the Republican platform.
Gimenez pointed out that many Hispanics fled their countries to escape socialism, which the Democratic Party has embraced to an extreme level. This shift towards socialism does not resonate with Hispanic voters, further solidifying their support for the Republican Party. The lawmaker predicted that Republicans would continue to grow their support among Hispanics and Latinos if trends in both parties persist.
In the Northeast, Trump also overperformed in areas traditionally unfriendly to the GOP, such as the Bronx County in New York, a heavily-Hispanic borough. Despite re-electing Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Trump saw a 10% increase in support in the Bronx compared to 2020. He also made gains in every other borough in New York City, showcasing his broad appeal.
Moving westward, Trump’s coattails helped Republican challengers in swing-district contests in Pennsylvania. Two Democratic incumbents, Representatives Matt Cartwright and Susan Wild, conceded their races to Republican challengers, a testament to Trump’s influence in these areas. Additionally, the typically voting-hesitant Amish community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, reportedly surged in support for Trump, drawn to the Republican Party’s values and policies.
Asian-Americans emerged as a significant voting bloc with a substantial trend towards Trump in the 2024 election. In California, counties with sizable Asian-American populations, such as Los Angeles and Orange counties, saw a double-digit increase in support for Trump. This surge in support from Asian-Americans contributed to narrowing the gap between Democrats and Republicans in traditionally blue states.
While Trump gained support in most states and territories, there were some areas where he saw a decrease in support, particularly among White college-aged women and senior citizens. The 65 and older age group was evenly split, while White college-aged women leaned towards the Democrats by a margin of 20 percentage points.
Despite these challenges, Republicans made significant gains in various regions across the country, solidifying their support among diverse voting blocs. Trump’s victory in the 2024 election reflects a growing trend towards conservative values and policies, setting the stage for a new era of Republican leadership.
