Trump vows fines on California after trans athlete won track championships

President Donald Trump has made it clear that he is not backing down when it comes to his stance on transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump vowed to impose “large-scale fines” on the state of California for allowing a biological male trans athlete to win multiple girls’ state titles. This comes after trans athlete AB Hernandez made headlines by winning first place in the girls’ high jump and triple jump, as well as second place in the long jump at the state track and field championships.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) responded to Trump’s threats by amending its rules to accommodate female athletes who finished behind Hernandez in the events he competed in. This meant that Hernandez had to share podium spots with the female athletes who would have earned those spots had a biologically male athlete not been competing.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) also got involved by launching a federal probe into California over potential Title IX violations regarding its policy allowing trans athletes in girls’ sports. The state had already been under investigation by the Department of Education since February.
A bipartisan survey by the Public Policy Institute of California found that the majority of California residents oppose biological male trans athletes competing in women’s sports. This sentiment was echoed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who stated that he believes trans athletes competing in girls’ sports is “deeply unfair.”
With tensions running high and federal investigations underway, the debate over transgender athletes in girls’ sports shows no signs of slowing down. As the state of California faces potential fines and scrutiny from the federal government, the issue remains a hot-button topic that continues to spark controversy and debate.
