President Donald Trump said on Monday that the U.S. and China are working towards a great relationship. He also mentioned that the U.S. holds powerful cards that could potentially “destroy China,” but he has no intention of playing them.

During a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Trump stated that the U.S. has significant leverage over China, but he prefers not to use it. The nature of these “cards” was not specified by Trump.

Trump revealed that he recently spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping and is considering a visit to China for further discussions on trade and other important matters.

Trade Negotiations Between U.S. and China

Both countries agreed to extend their trade truce for an additional 90 days to facilitate ongoing negotiations. Trump has increased tariffs on Chinese imports multiple times this year, with the current rate standing at 30%. China, in return, has imposed a 10% duty on U.S. imports.

Treasury Secretary Scott Betting identified China’s support for sanctioned oil as a major point of contention during recent trade talks. The U.S. has raised concerns about China’s imports of Iranian and Russian oil, citing potential funding of terrorism and destabilizing activities.

U.S. Pushes for Changes in China’s Trade Practices

Bessent emphasized the need for China to reduce its reliance on exports and increase its role as a global trade partner. The U.S. aims to address China’s dominance in manufacturing and trade imbalances through ongoing negotiations.
