Trump wins Arizona to sweep swing states and secure 312 total electoral votes

President-elect Trump has officially secured a victory in Arizona, successfully avenging his 2020 election loss in the crucial swing state. The Associated Press called the race on Saturday evening, granting Trump an additional 11 electoral votes and bringing his total count to 312. His opponent, Vice President Harris, trailed behind with 226 electoral votes.
Trump’s triumph in Arizona marks the end of the battle for swing states in the 2024 presidential election. Along with Arizona, he also clinched electoral votes in North Carolina, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. In the 2020 election, President Biden had narrowly won Arizona by less than half a percent, with a slim margin in Maricopa County where he beat Trump by 2%.
Prior to Biden’s victory in 2020, Republicans had consistently carried Arizona since 1996. Immigration emerged as a critical issue in the state, which shares a border with Mexico. Residents like Mary from Phoenix emphasized the need for swifter border enforcement, advocating for the incarceration of individuals suspected of criminal activities.
On the other hand, some Arizonans resonated with Harris’ message that Trump posed a threat to democracy. Bob from Tempe highlighted concerns about the erosion of government regulations and the need for a shift in judicial appointments. Arizona boasts a higher proportion of Hispanic voters compared to the national average, with a significant shift towards Trump leading up to the election despite Biden’s 19-point lead among this demographic in the previous election.
The state is also gearing up for a new senatorial election following Senator Kyrsten Sinema’s decision not to seek re-election. The Republican candidate, Kari Lake, a former TV news host and unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate in 2022, will face off against Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego, a former Marine representing Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District.
As the political landscape continues to evolve in Arizona, the outcome of the 2024 election underscores the state’s significance in national politics. Stay tuned for further updates on the political dynamics in Arizona.
