Trump’s 50 percent rate on India comes into force

Trump’s 50 Percent Tariff on Indian Imports Now in Effect
President Donald Trump’s additional 25 percent tariff on imports from India went into effect on August 27, raising the total tariff rate to 50 percent on a wide range of goods entering the United States.
Back in April, President Trump initially imposed a 26 percent tariff on Indian imports as part of his broader trade strategy to pressure the Indian government into reducing trade barriers. This rate was later adjusted slightly down to 25 percent.
The escalation in tariffs has been a point of contention between the two countries, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to meet with President Trump in the Oval Office on February 13, 2025, to discuss the ongoing trade disputes.
It remains to be seen how this latest tariff increase will impact the trade relationship between India and the United States, but it is clear that both countries are feeling the strain of the escalating trade tensions.
