Trump’s team still hasn’t signed transition of power agreements, White House says

The Trump-Vance transition team has yet to sign the necessary documents to officially kickstart the transition of power, according to the White House. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters on Thursday that despite ongoing communication, the team has not finalized agreements with the White House and the General Service Administration (GSA).

Failure to sign these documents means that the incoming administration officials cannot receive security clearances or briefings, and the FBI cannot screen Trump’s selections for key positions such as the Cabinet. Additionally, the agreements cover essential resources like office space, IT equipment, office supplies, fleet vehicles, mail management, and the payment of expenses.

President Biden has already met with the president-elect to demonstrate a smooth transition of power and offer any necessary assistance. Jean-Pierre emphasized the importance of continuing discussions with the Trump transition team to ensure an efficient and peaceful handover of power. The White House is ready to provide support as outlined in the GSA and White House memorandum of agreement.

The delay in initiating the formal transition process could result in senators voting on Trump’s Cabinet picks without the customary background checks, potentially overlooking red flags and suitability concerns. The reasons for the delay in signing the documents remain unclear.

Transition spokesperson Brian Hughes previously stated that the team’s lawyers were engaging with officials from the outgoing administration and pledged updates once a decision was reached.

In summary, the transition of power from the Trump-Vance team to the new administration is currently stalled due to the lack of signed documents. The White House is eager to facilitate a smooth transition process, but the delay may have implications for key appointments and background checks. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
