US Election 2024

Trump’s third term trial balloon gets resounding response in new poll

President Donald Trump has been making headlines by teasing a potential run for a third term in the White House, despite the fact that it is prohibited by the U.S. Constitution. A recent poll has shed light on how Americans feel about this idea, and the results are far from positive.

During a rally in Nevada in late January, just days after his second term inauguration, Trump made a statement that raised eyebrows. “It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve, not once but twice or three times or four times,” he said, before clarifying that he meant to serve twice. This was just the beginning of Trump’s flirtation with the idea of a 2028 re-election run.

In a recent interview, Trump stated that he is “not joking” about running for a third term. Despite the legal obstacle presented by the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution, which limits presidents to two terms, Trump seems undeterred.

However, public opinion seems to be firmly against the idea. According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos national survey conducted in April, three-quarters of respondents believe that Trump should not run for a third term. Even among Republicans, a majority of 53% expressed opposition to the idea.

The poll, which surveyed 4,306 U.S. adults, had a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points. These results highlight the uphill battle that Trump would face if he were to pursue a third term.

Despite Trump’s strong influence within the GOP, it seems that most Americans, regardless of their political affiliation, are not in favor of a potential third term for the former president. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether Trump will heed the sentiment of the American people or continue to pursue his political ambitions.

In conclusion, while Trump’s teasing of a third term may have generated buzz, the reality is that the majority of Americans are not on board with the idea. The constitutional limitations, combined with public opinion, suggest that a third term for Trump is unlikely to come to fruition.
