Tulane coach says Northwestern ‘disrespected’ New Orleans for declining tribute

The Tulane football team secured a remarkable 23-3 victory over Northwestern this past Saturday, with a personal vendetta motivating their performance. The Green Wave faced off against the Wildcats at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, just one day after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the city.

In a symbolic gesture, Tulane donned green helmets reminiscent of the 2005 team that had to endure the aftermath of the devastating hurricane. Additionally, they sported white jerseys as a tribute to their predecessors. On the other hand, Northwestern opted for white tops for the season opener, despite Tulane’s request to wear white uniforms in honor of the 2005 team being denied.

Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall revealed that the denial of their uniform request served as “motivation” for the players. He expressed his displeasure at what he perceived as a sign of disrespect towards the city of New Orleans by the opposing team. Sumrall emphasized the significance of representing the city with pride and determination.

The Superdome in New Orleans did not reopen until 2006, underscoring the challenges faced by the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Sumrall, who has a longstanding connection with Tulane, having previously served as a co-defensive coordinator and later returning as the head coach, is deeply invested in the team’s success and the city’s resilience.

The Green Wave’s resounding victory over Northwestern not only showcased their athletic prowess but also highlighted their unwavering spirit in the face of adversity. As Tulane continues to forge ahead in the college football season, their commitment to honoring the past while building towards the future remains steadfast.
