Twila Grosse nominated to fly the Progressive Conservative flag in Preston by election

Twila Grosse will take the hopes of the Progressive Conservatives into the upcoming Preston midterm elections.

“The communities in Preston deserve a strong voice at the decision-making table,” Grosse said in a press release.

“I’ve focused my entire life on giving back to these communities,” she said. “I know I can help the people of Preston drive even more as part of Tim Houston’s PC government.”

Grosse has a background in finance working for 36 years at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport and has always been actively involved in her community.

That community service includes serving on the boards of directors of the Black Cultural Society of Nova Scotia, the Alderney Landing Community Culture Center, United Way Halifax, the Halifax Foundation, the Atlantic Baptist Foundation, the African United Baptist Association of Nova Scotia, Atlantic Baptist Women, and the Southeastern Community Health Board.

Grosse is also actively involved in leadership roles within the Cherry Brook United Baptist Church.

“Twila has devoted her time and energy to improving her community,” said Prime Minister Tim Houston. “I want Twila’s perspective and experience at the decision-making table as part of our PC team. Preston needs an action-oriented leader who will help me get health care right, care for our most vulnerable and make life more affordable – not an opposition MLA criticizing from the sidelines.”

Houston said he looks forward to campaigning with Grosse to earn the support of Preston voters.

The Preston seat has been vacant since first-term Liberal MLA Angela Simmonds stepped down, effective April 1.

The House of Assembly Act requires a by-election order to be issued within six months of the date the vacancy occurred, but the PC government has yet to call the election. The prime minister has said the by-elections will be held before the House meets for its autumn session.

Most PCs currently hold 31 seats in the Nova Scotia legislature.

The Liberal Party, which has 16 seats, has nominated Carlo Simmons, who lives in Preston for life, to carry the Liberal flag.

The New Democratic Party, represented by six MLAs in the legislature, has nominated Colter CC Simmonds for Preston. Simmonds came third in the Preston race in the August 2021 election, finishing with 1,433 votes and 28 per cent of the total.

Angela Simmonds won the seat with 2,226 votes, 43 percent of the votes cast. Archy Beals of the PCs came in second with 1,472 votes, 29 percent of the total.

The Liberals have kept the current 100 square miles east of Dartmouth and previous variants of it for the past 20 years.
