U.S. claims Para World Hockey gold medal with 6-1 win over Canada

United States Claims Gold in Para World Hockey Championship Final

Defenceman Jack Wallace led the way with three goals and an assist, while Brody Roybal contributed five assists as the United States secured a 6-1 victory over Canada in the Para World Hockey Championship final at LECOM Harborcentre in Buffalo.

This win marked the seventh gold medal for the Americans at the event, where they once again faced Canada in the final for the eighth consecutive time.

Despite a goal from Liam Hickey, Canada found themselves trailing 3-1 after the first period and 4-1 heading into the third.

Canada’s head coach Russ Herrington acknowledged the outstanding performance by the U.S. team, stating, “That is the best game I’ve seen the U.S. play in a long time, and it’s just unfortunate that it came today against us. They didn’t give us any space or room to breathe. We were unable to impose our will at all tonight.”

He also highlighted the determination of the American team, suggesting that they were seeking redemption from last year’s final. Herrington emphasized the need for Canada to match that level of intensity and focus as they prepare for the Paralympics in Italy in March.

Adam Kingsmill, the Canadian goaltender, made 18 saves on 24 shots, while Griffin Lamarre stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced for the U.S.

The U.S. capitalized on 2 of their 3 power play opportunities, while Canada failed to convert on all 3 of their chances.

David Hoff, the head coach of the U.S. National team, commended his team’s strong start and their ability to maintain momentum throughout the game. He praised the group for their relentless performance and solid teamwork.

In the bronze medal game, Czech Republic emerged victorious with a 2-1 overtime win against China.

Canada topped Group A with a perfect 3-0 record, while the U.S. finished first in Group B with the same flawless record.

Looking Ahead to Milano-Cortina

Despite the disappointment of the final result, Canada’s captain Tyler McGregor emphasized the growth and progress the team has made over the past year. He acknowledged the tough loss to the U.S. and emphasized the need to use it as motivation moving forward.

McGregor was named the Best Forward of the tournament following the game.

With five gold medals, five silver medals, and three bronze medals in 15 appearances at the World Para Hockey Championship, Canada remains a powerhouse in the sport.
