Former British nurse Lucy Letby, who is currently serving a whole life sentence in prison for the murders of seven babies in her care, is now being questioned about the deaths of additional infants, according to police reports on Wednesday.
Letby, 34, was convicted last year for killing the newborns and attempting to murder seven others between June 2015 and June 2016 while working in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester, northern England. This made her the worst serial child killer in modern British history.
She was also found guilty of an eighth count of attempted murder during a retrial earlier this year. Police have been conducting further investigations into Letby’s entire time as a nurse at the hospital in Chester and another facility in Liverpool where she trained, in order to determine if there are more victims.
Cheshire Police confirmed that Letby has been interviewed in prison under caution as part of the ongoing investigation into baby deaths and non-fatal collapses at the Countess of Chester Hospital and the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. They stated that updates on the case will be provided at the appropriate time.
In the midst of these investigations, a public inquiry is currently underway to examine how Letby’s actions went unnoticed and to assess the hospital’s response to concerns raised by doctors about her before her arrest.
Despite some criticism from medical and statistical experts regarding the evidence presented during Letby’s trials, as well as speculation in the media about a potential miscarriage of justice, the London Court of Appeal has rejected her appeals to overturn her convictions.
The case of Lucy Letby has sparked widespread debate and scrutiny, shedding light on the complexities of criminal investigations and legal proceedings surrounding such heinous crimes. The pursuit of justice for the victims and their families remains a top priority as authorities continue to delve into the details of this tragic and disturbing case.
