British lawmakers recently voted against launching a national inquiry into the U.K. grooming gang scandal, following objections to the way the vote was presented. The scandal involved men of predominantly Pakistani heritage sexually abusing girls in northern England towns for years. Despite international scrutiny led by Elon Musk, the vote on the amendment to hold a statutory inquiry was defeated in the Labour-controlled House of Commons.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned that voting in favor of the amendment would jeopardize the overall bill it was attached to. Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch argued for a national inquiry to address systemic issues connecting various towns involved in the scandal. Reports had revealed shocking levels of abuse, with over 1,400 girls abused in Rotherham alone between 1997 and 2013.

The issue resurfaced when officials in Oldham requested a national inquiry into their handling of the crisis, which the U.K. government declined, insisting on local investigations. This decision prompted calls from Badenoch and Musk for a national inquiry to address the widespread issue. Musk, in particular, has been vocal about the need for justice for the victims and has called for the prosecution of top U.K. government officials.

Starmer had criticized Musk’s involvement in the issue, accusing him of spreading misinformation and aligning with far-right ideologies. Despite the opposition, calls for a national inquiry continue to grow, with advocates emphasizing the importance of addressing the root causes of the scandal.
