First Clash Between Ukraine and North Korean Troops: Zelenskyy Warns of Escalation
Ukraine has engaged militarily for the first time with North Korean troops deployed to support Russia in its ongoing war with its neighbor, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a nightly address on Tuesday. Zelenskyy did not provide specific details about the engagement but warned of Russia’s intentions to escalate the conflict that has been raging for nearly 1,000 days.
According to a Kyiv official, Ukraine’s army fired artillery at North Korean soldiers in Russia’s Kursk border region. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for strong counteraction against terrorism, comparing it to a virus that can spread rapidly without sufficient resistance. He called on Ukraine’s allies worldwide to prevent Russia and North Korea from escalating the conflict further.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry confirmed that more than 10,000 North Korean troops had arrived in Russia, with a significant number deployed in frontline areas, including the Kursk region where Ukrainian forces had previously staged an incursion. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov reported a small engagement with North Korean troops and anticipated further deployments totaling about 15,000 soldiers.
Russia currently has 1.3 million active-duty soldiers and 2 million in reserve. The country is experiencing a high number of casualties, with around 1,200 reported daily. Despite the significant human cost, there seems to be no end in sight to the conflict, indicating a prolonged war of attrition.
Zelenskyy raised concerns about the strategic goals of North Korea in aligning with Russia, warning of potential instability in Asia. He urged South Korea to play a more active role in the conflict and collaborate on enhancing defensive capabilities to counter artillery and missile threats from North Korea. Zelenskyy also questioned China’s silence on North Korea’s involvement in the war.
In response to North Korea’s recent actions, the United States conducted joint military drills with South Korea and Japan, showcasing a display of force in the region. North Korea fired short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, following a flight test of its newest intercontinental ballistic missile designed to reach the U.S. mainland.
The situation remains tense as Ukraine, Russia, and North Korea navigate a complex web of alliances and military engagements. Zelenskyy’s calls for international support underscore the need for a united front against escalating conflicts and the preservation of global stability. The world watches closely as the dynamics of power and diplomacy continue to evolve in the face of ongoing challenges.
