Ukraine ramps up pressure on Russia with underwater strike on Crimean bridge

A massive explosion targeting the Kerch Bridge linking Russia to Crimea has left it in a state of emergency, according to the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). The surprise detonation, which took place on Tuesday, comes just days after Ukraine carried out “Operation Spider’s Web,” a series of coordinated drone strikes that penetrated deep into Russian territory, taking out dozens of Russia’s most powerful bomber jets and surveillance planes.
SBU Lt. Gen. Vasily Malyuk stated, “Illegal objects of the Russian Federation have no place on the territory of our state. The Crimean Bridge is therefore an absolutely legitimate target, especially given that the enemy used it as a logistical artery to secure their troops. Crimea is Ukraine, and any manifestations of the occupation will receive our harsh response.”
The SBU detonated around 2,500 pounds of underwater explosives along the bridge, causing significant damage to one of the pillars. Footage captured individuals on top of the bridge surveying the aftermath of the blast. Malyuk, who supervised the operation, revealed that months of planning went into the attack.
“The bridge is in a state of emergency,” the SBU declared. Traffic across the Kerch Bridge was delayed for three hours, with the bridge reportedly reopening before closing a second time. Fortunately, no civilians were injured in the blast.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also reported that Russia launched a “savage strike” on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, directly targeting the city with rocket artillery. A rescue operation is currently underway, with three confirmed fatalities and many individuals wounded.
Zelenskyy expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and criticized Russia for its actions. He highlighted an incident where a shell pierced the wall of an apartment on the 9th floor, emphasizing Russia’s disregard for civilian lives.
The recent attacks demonstrate the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides engaging in aggressive actions. The situation remains volatile, and the international community is closely monitoring developments in the region.
