Ukrainian forces destroy 40 Russian warplanes in massive drone attack

Ukrainian forces carried out a daring drone attack on Russian air bases deep within Russian territory on Sunday, destroying 40 aircraft in the process. The attack, which took more than a year to plan, targeted five airfields and involved drones transported in containers carried by trucks into Russian territory.

The drones successfully hit 41 planes stationed at several airfields, including A-50, Tu-95, and Tu-22M aircraft. These aircraft are commonly used by Moscow for offensive purposes, such as launching missiles at Ukraine and coordinating targets. The official responsible for orchestrating the attack revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally oversaw the operation.

In a statement following the attack, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of protecting Ukraine’s independence, state, and people. The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump and his administration were not notified of the attack ahead of time.

The strike comes just before Ukrainian and Russian officials are scheduled to meet for a second round of ceasefire talks in Istanbul, Turkey. Additionally, a series of explosions targeted bridges in Russia near Ukraine’s border the day before the drone attack, although Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for those incidents.

One of the explosions occurred on a highway bridge over a railway in the Bryansk region, coinciding with the passage of a passenger train to Moscow. Another explosion targeted a railway bridge over a highway in the neighboring Kursk region, causing damage to a passing freight train.

The successful drone attack showcases Ukraine’s determination to defend itself against Russian aggression and protect its sovereignty. The incident adds a new layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict between the two nations and highlights the evolving tactics being employed in the region.
