The Ukrainian Canadian Congress Urges Government to Extend Emergency Visas for Ukrainian Immigrants
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress is raising concerns about the uncertain future facing many of the 300,000 Ukrainians who arrived in Canada under three-year emergency visas, as their temporary residencies are set to expire.
Executive Director Ihor Michalchyshyn recently met with Immigration Minister Marc Miller to advocate for the automatic renewal of visas for another three years to provide stability for the Ukrainian immigrants.
However, Minister Miller stated that in order to stay longer as temporary residents, the Ukrainians must apply for an extension to a working permit or a student visa, as the government is not prepared to grant permanent residency to all 300,000 individuals who arrived under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel program.
The immigration program was launched by the federal government in March 2022 and expired two years later, leading to concerns about the status of Ukrainian immigrants in Canada.
In a positive development, the government of Newfoundland and Labrador has expressed its support for automatically extending the emergency visas until March 31, 2028, providing a temporary solution to the pressing issue.
As the Ukrainian Canadian Congress continues to advocate for the rights of Ukrainian immigrants in Canada, the need for a long-term solution to their residency status remains a top priority.
