In a surprising turn of events, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres commended President Donald Trump for announcing a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Guterres, known for his criticism of Trump, issued a rare positive statement just days after condemning the U.S. strikes in Iran.
“I very much welcome President Trump’s announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. I urge the two countries to respect it fully. The fighting must stop,” Guterres wrote. “The people of the two countries have already suffered too much. It is my sincere hope that this ceasefire can be replicated in the other conflicts in the region.”

President Trump’s Response to Israel and Iran
Following the U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities on June 22, Guterres expressed concern, calling it “a perilous turn in a region that cannot endure another cycle of destruction.” He further stated that there was a risk of the conflict escalating with catastrophic consequences.

President Trump’s Actions Following Ceasefire
President Trump announced the ceasefire just over 48 hours after Guterres’ warning, bringing an end to what he referred to as the “12-Day War,” alluding to Israel’s historic Six-Day War in 1967.
However, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with both Israel and Iran as the ceasefire faced challenges. He voiced his displeasure with Israel for what he perceived as aggressive actions prior to the ceasefire taking effect. The president was also frustrated when Israel threatened retaliation after Iran allegedly violated the ceasefire, a claim Tehran denied.

President Trump’s Stance on the Conflict
Subsequently, Trump assured that Israel would not launch an attack on Iran and that their planes would return home. He reiterated his opposition to Iran possessing nuclear weapons and vowed that Tehran would never rebuild its facilities. The president emphasized that both sides were equally committed to ending the war.
