UN decision to reduce footprint in Gaza based on alleged Israeli strike, IDF says ‘not true’

The United Nations has once again found itself in the spotlight, as it faces criticism for blaming Israel for an attack on one of its compounds in Gaza. The world body has announced its decision to reduce its presence in Gaza, citing soaring humanitarian needs. The incident in question occurred on March 19, when a strike on the U.N.’s Deir al Balah compound resulted in the death of one U.N. employee and injuries to six others. U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric claimed that the attack was caused by an Israeli tank, a claim that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vehemently denied.
The IDF stated that they did not strike the U.N. compound and urged caution regarding unverified reports. Despite the IDF’s denial, the U.N. spokesperson pointed the finger at Israel without mentioning Hamas or other extremist groups operating in Gaza. Dujarric emphasized the need for all parties to the conflict to respect the inviolability of U.N. premises and called for an independent investigation into the incident.
Critics, however, have raised concerns about the U.N.’s reluctance to hold Hamas and other terrorist groups accountable for their actions. Research analyst Joe Truzman highlighted the U.N.’s failure to address Hamas’s exploitation of U.N. facilities in Gaza and its use of civilians as human shields. The recent killing of Hamas political bureau member Ismail Barhoum by the IDF while allegedly operating out of a hospital further underscored the issue of Hamas’s presence in civilian areas.
Truzman emphasized that Hamas’s primary goal is not the protection of Palestinian civilians but the survival of the Islamist group. The recent escalation of conflict in Gaza following a ceasefire and hostage exchange has put pressure on both Israel and Hamas. Israel’s decision to cut humanitarian aid to Gaza in an effort to secure an extension of the ceasefire has added to the tensions in the region.
As the situation in Gaza remains volatile, the international community will be closely monitoring the actions of all parties involved. The need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident at the U.N. compound is crucial to ensure accountability and justice for the victims. The United Nations must uphold its mandate to protect civilians and uphold international law in conflict zones like Gaza.
