University of Wisconsin-Madison’s ex-diversity officer scrutinized over spending, judgement amid DEI crackdown

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s former chief diversity officer, Lavar Charleston, faced criticism for his handling of funds and employee raises, according to a report. Charleston was removed from his position in January but continues to work as a faculty member. An internal investigation revealed that Charleston provided unjustified raises ranging from 10% to 23% to his employees, amidst a crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within the Wisconsin university system.

Records showed that Charleston spent $18,000 on massage therapy for students and $21,000 on a conference in Lake Geneva. In December, Charleston claimed he was directed by a former provost to spend a $6 million surplus. Additionally, the report highlighted that Charleston’s per-employee spending was the highest on campus.

President Donald Trump’s administration has been pushing to eliminate DEI programs across the country, including in higher education. The Department of Education is currently investigating approximately 50 universities for alleged racial discrimination, particularly in programs that exclude certain races. Institutions were warned that they could lose federal funding over race-based preferences in admissions, scholarships, and other activities.

The investigation is focused on universities’ relationships with the PhD Project, an organization that encourages Black, Hispanic, and Native American professionals to pursue business doctorate degrees. The Trump administration argues that DEI programs may discriminate against White and Asian American students, violating Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is among the institutions under scrutiny for their diversity initiatives. Fox News Digital has reached out to the university for comment on the matter. It is essential for educational institutions to prioritize fiscal responsibility and transparency in their diversity programs to ensure equitable opportunities for all students.
