US Army infantryman dies in vehicle crash during training in Hungary

A tragic incident occurred this week as a U.S. soldier lost his life during a training exercise in Hungary. Sgt. Aaron Cox, a 24-year-old infantryman from Mabank, Texas, was involved in a vehicle crash near Camp Croft while preparing for the Saber Guardian 25 exercise. The Army’s 101st Airborne Division, specifically the “Strike” 2nd Mobile Brigade Combat Team, confirmed the devastating news.

Col. Duke Reim, commander of the 2MBCT, expressed his sorrow over the loss of Sgt. Cox, highlighting his exemplary leadership and dedication to his service. The Army is providing support to Cox’s family during this difficult time, and they are grateful for the swift response and assistance from their Hungarian allies.

Sgt. Cox joined the Army in 2021 and was stationed at Fort Campbell after completing basic training. He had successfully completed the Army Basic Leader Course and the Combat Lifesaver Course, earning several accolades such as the Air Assault Badge, Army Achievement Medal, and Expert Infantryman Badge.

Representative Lance Gooden of Texas, who represented Cox’s hometown district, paid tribute to the fallen soldier, praising his commitment to protecting the nation and honoring his memory as a symbol of American resilience. Cox had previously served in Poland and was on his second deployment at the time of the accident.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation, as the military community mourns the loss of Sgt. Cox. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks that soldiers face in the line of duty, echoing a similar tragedy earlier this year when four soldiers lost their lives in Lithuania during a mission to repair a tactical vehicle.
