US briefed Ukraine ahead of Putin’s ‘experimental Intermediate-range ballistic’ attack

In a recent development, a U.S. official has confirmed that Ukrainian authorities were given a heads-up about Russia’s experimental Intermediate-range ballistic missile attack. This advance warning was intended to help Ukraine prepare for the potential use of such weapons against them. Russian President Vladimir Putin later confirmed the attack in response to the U.S. and the U.K. approving Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied long-range missiles to target Russia.

Initially reported as an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) strike, the attack on the city of Dnipro caused panic worldwide. However, it was later clarified by Putin and U.S. sources that the weapon used was not an ICBM but a missile known as the Oreshnik. Putin highlighted the speed and capabilities of the missile, emphasizing that current air defense systems were ineffective against it.

While the exact impact of the attack is still unclear, it has raised concerns about Russia’s military capabilities and intentions. Despite this, a U.S. official downplayed the significance of the missile, stating that Russia likely has only a limited number of these experimental weapons. The official also emphasized Ukraine’s resilience in the face of Russian aggression.

Following President Biden’s decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) against Russia, Ukraine retaliated by targeting a military arsenal in Bryansk, Russia. The use of these sophisticated missiles, with support from U.S. satellites, has escalated tensions between the two countries.

Putin’s announcement of further missile deployments and his warning to Ukrainian citizens about impending attacks have raised concerns about the ongoing conflict. The Pentagon confirmed that Russia had informed the U.S. about the attack, indicating a level of communication despite the hostilities.

In response to the escalating situation, the U.S. has pledged to support Ukraine in strengthening its air defense systems. This includes supplying additional Patriot and Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities in defending against future threats.

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to unfold, the international community is closely monitoring the situation and working towards a peaceful resolution. The events surrounding the missile attack serve as a stark reminder of the volatility in the region and the importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
