US calls on UN nations to reject Ukrainian peace resolution, back theirs instead

The United States is urging member states of the United Nations (U.N.) to support its resolution marking the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war. The U.S. draft resolution, which was presented on Friday, differs from the resolution proposed by Ukraine and its European allies. While the U.S. resolution mourns the loss of life in the conflict, it emphasizes the U.N.’s role in maintaining international peace and peacefully resolving disputes. It calls for a swift end to the conflict and urges a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.

The U.S. resolution aligns with President Donald Trump’s belief that the U.N. should uphold its founding purpose of maintaining international peace and security. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of acknowledging that lasting peace is achievable and that the U.N. can play a role in ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The U.S. is working to rally support from allies for its resolution, framing it as a crucial step towards achieving peace. However, Ukraine’s resolution is seen as a potential obstacle to lasting peace by some European diplomats. The U.S. is also urging the U.N. General Assembly to reject any amendments, including one proposed by Russia that calls for addressing the root causes of the conflict.

Despite calls from the U.S. for Ukraine to withdraw its resolution, Ukraine has refused to do so. The resolutions from the U.S. and Ukraine will be voted on by the 193-nation assembly on Monday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged all U.N. member states to join the U.S. in the pursuit of peace.

The divide between the U.S. and Ukraine has been highlighted by the exclusion of Ukraine and European allies from recent peace talks between Russia and the U.S. President Trump has warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to negotiate a peace deal with Russia quickly or risk losing the country. In response, Zelenskyy expressed willingness to give up his presidency in exchange for peace in Ukraine or NATO membership.

However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated during talks with the U.S. that Russia is opposed to any negotiations that involve Ukraine joining NATO. The situation remains complex and uncertain as the U.N. General Assembly prepares to vote on the resolutions put forth by the U.S. and Ukraine. The international community watches closely as efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine continue.
