US citizen among 4 dead in Laos after suspected alcohol poisoning

An unfortunate incident has occurred in Laos, where an American, two Danes, and one Australian tourist lost their lives after consuming tainted alcohol. Reports indicate that several people fell ill in a town popular with backpackers due to the contaminated drinks. The only victim whose identity has been disclosed is 19-year-old Bianca Jones from Australia.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese informed Parliament about Jones’ tragic demise after she was evacuated from Vang Vieng, Laos, for medical treatment in a Thai hospital. Her friend, also 19 years old, is currently hospitalized in Thailand and fighting for her life. Albanese expressed the deep sorrow felt by everyone, stating, “This is every parent’s very worst fear and a nightmare that no one should have to endure.”

Shaun Bowles, the father of the hospitalized Australian tourist, requested privacy for his family during this difficult time. He expressed gratitude for the support and love they have received from their home country. Australian media reported that Jones was the fourth foreigner to die from consuming the toxic alcohol.

According to a police official in Thailand, the cause of death was methanol poisoning from fake liquor. Methanol is a dangerous alcohol commonly used in industries as a solvent, pesticide, and fuel source. Counterfeit alcohol is a prevalent issue in Laos, prompting warnings from the governments of Australia and Britain to exercise caution while consuming drinks in the country.

The U.S. Department of State is collaborating with local authorities in investigating the incident and providing consular assistance. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong urged parents and young people to have conversations about risks associated with alcohol consumption to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
