US-recognized Venezuelan opposition promises reparations for Tren de Aragua crimes
Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who is recognized as the President-elect of Venezuela by the United States, has made a commitment to provide reparations to Laken Riley’s family and other Americans affected by the crimes of the Tren de Aragua street gang. In a letter co-written with fellow opposition leader María Corina Machado, Urrutia expressed his condolences to Riley’s family, stating that her life was tragically cut short by an individual who should never have been allowed to enter the United States.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently spoke with Urrutia and Machado, reiterating Urrutia’s legitimacy as the president of Venezuela. The Biden administration had previously referred to Urrutia as the president-elect before leaving office.
The letter from the opposition leaders blamed Riley’s murder on Nicolás Maduro’s regime, which they claim has created an environment where criminal organizations like Tren de Aragua can operate with impunity. Urrutia vowed that if he is officially installed as president, he will hold accountable all those responsible for the devastation caused both within Venezuela and internationally.
The opposition leaders also highlighted the contributions of Venezuelan immigrants in the United States, noting that the majority of them are law-abiding individuals who are eager to return to a free and prosperous Venezuela. They expressed their desire to establish a comprehensive framework for reparations for Venezuelans affected by the current regime as well as victims abroad, including Riley’s family.
In a separate development, the Trump administration’s attempt to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan nationals affiliated with Tren de Aragua was temporarily blocked by a federal district court. This move intensified legal battles over deportation efforts, with some Trump allies calling for the impeachment of the presiding judge.
Venezuela has been facing economic collapse and widespread poverty, leading millions of Venezuelans to flee the country in search of better opportunities. Since taking power in 2013, Nicolás Maduro’s regime has been embroiled in controversies involving corruption, authoritarianism, money laundering, and drug trafficking. Despite international recognition of Urrutia’s election victory, Maduro has refused to step down.
Maduro has issued an arrest warrant for Urrutia, who fled to Spain in September last year. Riley’s tragic murder, allegedly committed by a Venezuelan national who entered the US illegally, sparked national outrage and prompted new immigration legislation signed into law by President Trump earlier this year.
