USS Gravely warship deployed to southern border in line with Trump order

The U.S. Navy has taken a significant step in supporting the Trump administration’s efforts to secure the southern border by deploying the USS Gravely, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, to the U.S.-Mexico border. Departing from Naval Weapons Station Yorktown in Virginia, the USS Gravely is set to carry out maritime missions aimed at halting illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

Gen. Gregory Guillot of U.S. Northern Command emphasized the importance of Gravely’s deployment in enhancing the protection of the United States’ territorial integrity, sovereignty, and security. The Joint Staff director for operations, Air Force Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, revealed that the destroyer will be stationed in the Gulf of America to intercept drug smugglers at sea.

The Pentagon’s commitment to combatting maritime-related threats such as terrorism, weapons proliferation, transnational crime, piracy, environmental destruction, and illegal seaborne immigration is underscored by the deployment of the USS Gravely. This deployment will bolster maritime efforts and address critical capabilities gaps in support of the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection.

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, highlighted the significance of controlling both the land border and territorial waters to safeguard U.S. sovereignty. With the Trump administration’s focus on strengthening land border security, there has been a noticeable increase in migrant boat encounters near the San Diego coast, prompting the need for enhanced maritime security measures.

Coast Guard District 11 Capt. Jason Hagen noted a shift in migrant smuggling operations to the maritime environment due to heightened land border security measures. He highlighted the diverse nationalities of individuals encountered aboard migrant boats, including individuals from U.S. adversary countries like China, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan, raising concerns about national security threats.

The deployment of the USS Gravely signifies a crucial step in the whole-of-government approach to securing the southern border and upholding U.S. sovereignty. By integrating maritime assets and capabilities, the Navy aims to complement existing border security measures and prevent illicit activities at sea.

In conclusion, the USS Gravely’s deployment to the U.S.-Mexico border reflects the ongoing efforts to fortify border security and protect the nation from threats posed by illegal immigration and drug smuggling. With a focus on maritime security, the Navy is poised to play a vital role in safeguarding U.S. territorial integrity and sovereignty.
