Vatican reveals 2 Pope Francis acute respiratory crises

Pope Francis faced two acute respiratory crises on Monday, which were considered less dangerous than the bronchospasm he experienced on Friday, according to the Vatican. The breathing difficulties were attributed to a significant buildup of mucus in the bronchial tubes, resulting in bronchospasm. To address this issue, two bronchoscopies were performed to remove the excess secretions. The Pope also required non-invasive mechanical ventilation in the afternoon as part of his treatment plan.

The Vatican mentioned in a statement that despite these challenges, Pope Francis remained alert, oriented, and cooperative throughout the medical procedures. However, his prognosis was still considered guarded due to the severity of the respiratory issues he was facing. Bronchospasm, as defined by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, involves the contraction of the bronchial tube muscles, leading to narrowing and obstruction of the airways.

This latest development came after reports that the Pope had a restful night. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on February 14 after his bronchitis worsened. Doctors diagnosed him with a complex respiratory infection involving viruses, bacteria, and fungi, which eventually led to pneumonia affecting both lungs.

Despite these challenges, Pope Francis spent Sunday without the need for a mechanical ventilation mask, which he had used following a breathing crisis on Friday. In a message posted on his social media account, the Pope expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he received from people around the world during this difficult time.

As the Pope continues his recovery journey, the global community remains hopeful for his improved health and well-being. The outpouring of prayers and well-wishes for his speedy recovery reflects the deep admiration and respect people have for Pope Francis and his leadership.
