Vatican reveals Pope Francis’ final words before death

Pope Francis, the beloved 88-year-old pontiff, spent his final hours surrounded by his personal nurse and caregiver, Massimiliano Strappetti. The Vatican revealed that Francis’ last words before his passing on Monday were a heartfelt expression of gratitude to Strappetti.

On Easter Sunday, Francis surprised the crowd of 50,000 faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square by taking a ride in the popemobile after delivering his Easter blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. The pontiff sought reassurance from Strappetti before embarking on the tour, asking, “Do you think I can manage it?” Once assured, Francis proceeded to embrace and greet the people, especially children, along his route.

After his tour, Francis thanked Strappetti for bringing him back to the Square, showcasing his humble and caring nature. The Pope then rested for the remainder of the afternoon and enjoyed a quiet dinner before showing signs of illness on Easter Monday morning. He slipped into a coma around 6:30 a.m. and made a farewell gesture to Strappetti before passing away due to a heart attack.

Despite the sudden turn of events, those present during Francis’ final moments reported that he did not suffer, and his death was swift. The Pope’s passing comes after years of battling ongoing health issues, including a recent hospitalization for double pneumonia.

The Vatican released images of Francis lying in state at the Vatican, clad in red vestments and his bishop’s miter, as preparations for his funeral began. The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, with a viewing of his body commencing on Wednesday in St. Peter’s Basilica.
