Veterans ask Trump to award Medal of Honor to Marine war hero snubbed by Biden

A group of veterans and lawmakers are pushing for President Donald Trump to award the Medal of Honor to an 87-year-old Marine Corps hero who was snubbed by former President Joe Biden. Maj. James Capers, a Vietnam War veteran, saved seven fellow Marines during an ambush in Phú Lộc in 1967.

Capers, despite sustaining severe injuries, continued to command his troops and led the defense against the North Vietnamese troops until a medevac flight arrived. He even attempted to sacrifice himself by jumping from the overloaded aircraft to ensure the safety of his fellow Marines. Capers received multiple gunshot wounds and shrapnel pieces, but his heroic actions saved the lives of all his comrades.

Although Capers was awarded the Bronze Star, which was later upgraded to the Silver Star, many believe he deserves the Medal of Honor for his bravery. Capers went on to serve in the Marines after the war and became a prominent figure in the “Ask a Marine” program, inspiring many young Americans to serve their country.

Despite his remarkable service, Capers has been overlooked for the Medal of Honor. With his advancing age and declining health, supporters fear he may never receive the recognition he deserves. However, with Trump in office, there is renewed hope that Capers will finally be honored for his actions.

Bill Cortese, a Marine Corps vet and supporter of Capers, believes that honoring him with the Medal of Honor would be a unifying force in the country. Cortese emphasized Capers’ character and the obstacles he overcame to serve his country, regardless of his race.

The push for Capers to receive the Medal of Honor has gained momentum, with 47 members of Congress signing a letter urging Trump to award the honor. They highlighted Capers’ selfless actions, leadership, and courage as exemplary of the highest traditions of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Cortese expressed gratitude for the lawmakers’ support and emphasized the importance of honoring veterans like Capers who have paved the way for others. As a Marine Corps veteran himself, Cortese believes in upholding traditions and recognizing the sacrifices of those who have served before.

In conclusion, the efforts to award Maj. James Capers the Medal of Honor reflect a deep respect for his service and sacrifice. It is a testament to the valor and bravery of all veterans who have served their country selflessly.
