Video shows U.S. Coast Guard rescue 3 stranded boaters from their capsized boat

The U.S. Coast Guard recently released video footage showcasing the dramatic rescue of three boaters whose vessel capsized off the coast of Florida. The rescue operation unfolded over the weekend near Captiva Island after a family member of one of the boaters contacted the Coast Guard to report that the group was overdue.

The distress call came in around 1 a.m. on Sunday, revealing that the last contact with the boaters was at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The missing individuals were navigating a 20-foot center console boat when they encountered trouble at sea. In response to the emergency call, the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater dispatched an MH-60 helicopter to locate the stranded boaters.

The aerial crew quickly spotted the three individuals sitting on top of their overturned boat, all appearing to be in good health. The Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach boat crew was also summoned to the scene to assist in the rescue operation. They successfully transferred the boaters onto their vessel and transported them to the Coast Guard station for medical evaluation.

Chief Warrant Officer Dennise Werre of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg commended the swift coordination between the Coast Guard and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the use of advanced search tools that facilitated the rescue mission. Despite the successful outcome, the cause of the boat capsizing remains unknown.

In light of this incident, Werre emphasized the importance of creating a float plan before embarking on a boating trip. A float plan provides vital information to first responders, such as the planned route, the number of passengers onboard, and available safety equipment. This proactive measure can significantly aid rescue efforts in case of emergencies at sea.
