Violent sex offender reaches statutory release

A Serial Sex Offender Released from Prison Again

Gerald Edmund Pike, a 57-year-old man with a history of violent sexual offences, is once again being released from prison. This comes just months after the Parole Board of Canada deemed that no program could safely handle him.

Pike is being released to a halfway house under strict conditions as part of a statutory release. This means that he is nearing the end of his sentence and cannot legally be held in prison any longer.

After being convicted of breaching his prior release conditions, Pike is currently serving a sentence of nearly four months, which has been added to a long-term supervision order.

According to reports from the parole board, Pike breached his conditions by leaving the facility where he was staying and spending the night with a vulnerable woman.

Most of Pike’s offences were committed in the St. John’s area, where he spent 6½ years in prison before being released in 2021 in the Halifax area under a long-term supervision order.

Considered a high risk to reoffend at the time of his release, Halifax Regional Police even issued a warning to the community about Pike.

Just a few months after his release, Pike was taken back into custody for breaching his supervision order. Despite being released again, he was once again taken into custody in May of last year.

After multiple instances of breaching his conditions and being unlawfully at large, Pike was back at a halfway house. However, his refusal to take medication needed to control his sexual urges led to another suspension of his supervision order.

While Pike must be released due to nearing the end of his sentence, the parole board has expressed reservations about his behavior.

His conditions at the halfway house include abstaining from alcohol, avoiding places where alcohol is sold, having no contact with his victims or children under 18, reporting all relationships to his parole officer, taking his medication, and refraining from gambling.
