Volodymyr Zelenskyy skeptical of Vladimir Putin’s temporary Easter ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed doubt regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent announcement of a temporary ceasefire for the Easter holiday. Zelenskyy took to social media to share that air raid alerts were sounding across Ukraine and that Russian attack drones were spotted in the skies.

In response to Putin’s declaration, Zelenskyy shared his skepticism, stating that the presence of Russian drones in Ukrainian airspace reveals Putin’s true intentions towards Easter and human life. The Kremlin released a video of Putin announcing the ceasefire, citing humanitarian considerations and stating that the truce would be observed from 18:00 to 00:00 on Sunday to Monday.

Zelenskyy revealed that Russia had previously ignored the United States’ proposal for a 30-day truce after Ukraine responded positively. He emphasized that if Russia is genuinely willing to engage in a ceasefire, Ukraine will reciprocate the gesture. Zelenskyy proposed extending the ceasefire if it proves successful, as a way to build confidence and pave the way for peace.

Despite Putin’s announcement, Zelenskyy reported that Russian assault operations and artillery fire continued in several frontline sectors. He emphasized that Ukraine’s Defense Forces would respond in kind to any attacks, highlighting the lack of trust in Moscow’s words. Zelenskyy also mentioned that hostilities persisted in certain regions of Ukraine, where Russian strikes and artillery fire were ongoing.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has spanned over three years, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of lives on both sides. President Donald Trump mentioned that the deal would likely be signed on April 26, following reports that the U.S. had eased its demands for repayment of aid to Ukraine.
