Vonn continues World Cup skiing comeback at age 40

Lindsey Vonn to Make World Cup Ski Racing Comeback in St. Moritz

BEAVER CREEK, Colo. – Lindsey Vonn, the legendary American skier, is set to return to World Cup ski racing next weekend for a pair of super-G events in St. Moritz, Switzerland. At 40 years old, Vonn is making a comeback after a series of injuries forced her into retirement.

Vonn hinted at her return in an Instagram post shared by her sponsor, Red Bull, where she mentioned the allure of St. Moritz. The U.S. Ski Team has since confirmed her participation in the upcoming super-G competitions in St. Moritz, a course where she has previously achieved success by winning five of her 82 World Cup races.

This will mark Vonn’s first major race since February 2019, where she clinched a third-place finish in the downhill event at the world championships in Sweden. Following a partial knee replacement last April, Vonn has been diligently preparing for her return to competitive skiing.

Having earned enough points to compete on the World Cup circuit through recent lower-level competitions in Copper Mountain, Colorado, Vonn has been training as a forerunner at Beaver Creek this week. While she won’t be racing on Friday, she will serve as a forerunner ahead of the downhill on Saturday and the super-G on Sunday.

When Vonn retired, she held the record for the most World Cup wins by a woman, with 82 victories. Her ultimate goal was to surpass the all-time Alpine skiing record of 86 wins held by Ingemar Stenmark. However, her record was later surpassed by Mikaela Shiffrin in January 2023, who currently holds the record with 99 wins.

Other athletes, like Ester Ledecka from the Czech Republic, are thrilled to see Vonn back on the slopes. Ledecka, who won the 2018 Olympic super-G event, expressed her joy at Vonn’s return and believes she will continue to be a formidable force in the sport.

With her determination and unwavering spirit, Lindsey Vonn’s comeback to World Cup ski racing is eagerly anticipated by fans and fellow athletes alike. Her return to the slopes in St. Moritz signifies a new chapter in her storied career, one that promises excitement and inspiration for all who follow her journey.
