Walz reveals the missteps he saw with Harris campaign amid postmortem media blitz

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the failed 2024 vice presidential candidate, recently conducted a postmortem on his 2024 campaign with former Vice President Kamala Harris. In an interview with Politico, Walz expressed regret over playing it too safe during the cycle, stating, “We shouldn’t have been playing this thing so safe. I think we probably should have just rolled the dice and done the town halls, where voters may say, ‘You’re full of s—, I don’t believe in you.’ I think there could have been more of that.”

Walz joined Harris on the Democratic ticket in August 2024 after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race in July. The Harris-Walz campaign had just over 100 days to rally support before the election on November 5. However, the Trump-Vance ticket ultimately swept the battleground states on election night, securing 312 electoral votes compared to Harris’ 226.

Since the election, Walz has been on a media blitz, speaking with various outlets and reflecting on the campaign. He criticized Democrats for being more cautious in engaging with the media than Republicans and acknowledged that the campaign never felt ahead, likening their strategy to a “prevent defense” in football.

While Walz took ownership for the party’s loss in 2024, former presidential campaign staffers revealed that he was not presented to voters effectively and was kept in a “box,” hindering their chances against the Trump-Vance ticket. Some aides argued that Walz was underutilized and should have been given more visibility during the campaign.

Despite the setbacks, Walz has not ruled out a potential presidential run in 2028. In a recent interview with the New Yorker, he expressed openness to the idea, prompting mockery from conservatives on social media. However, Walz reiterated in his Politico interview that he is “not saying no” to a potential 2028 presidential run if the opportunity arises.

As Walz continues to reflect on the 2024 campaign and look towards the future, he remains committed to supporting the Democratic party and doing whatever it takes to secure victory in future elections. His willingness to learn from past mistakes and adapt his approach could prove crucial in navigating the challenges of future political campaigns.
