‘Water to my neck’: Sask. woman called a hero after saving boy who fell through ice

A courageous act of heroism unfolded in northern Saskatchewan when Elaine Ratt, a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, risked her own life to save a drowning boy at Sucker River Lake. Ratt, who was on her shift at the Sucker River Community Store, had no idea what was about to transpire when a panicked young boy rushed in begging for help.

“The fear in [his] eyes scared me,” Ratt recounted. Without hesitation, she dialed 911 and followed the boy to the lake where his friend had fallen through the ice while playing. As she approached the boy struggling in the water, Ratt’s primary focus was to keep his head above water and ensure his safety.

Despite the danger posed by the thinning ice, Ratt crawled towards the boy, who was starting to sink beneath the water. With a heart full of bravery and determination, she managed to hoist the boy onto a solid patch of ice, ensuring he was responsive before turning her attention to her own predicament. Ratt found herself submerged in the icy water, but her sole priority was the boy’s well-being.

After successfully rescuing the boy, Ratt struggled to pull herself out of the freezing water. With sheer determination, she eventually managed to get back onto the ice and carried the cold and frightened boy back to the store for warmth and safety. The entire ordeal was nothing short of a heroic act of selflessness and bravery.

The arrival of the RCMP and the Sucker River Fire Department further underscored the gravity of the situation. Despite the remote location, help eventually arrived, and the boy was transported to the La Ronge hospital where his body temperature was regulated to normal levels.

Reflecting on the incident, Ratt expressed gratitude that the outcome was positive this time, unlike a previous tragedy at Sucker River. She emphasized the importance of safety around icy waters, especially for children, and credited her maternal instinct for driving her to take immediate action.

Chief Tammy Cook-Searson of Lac La Ronge echoed Ratt’s sentiments, praising both the boy who sought help and Ratt for her courageous rescue. Cook-Searson described Ratt as a true hero deserving of recognition and respect for her selfless act of bravery.

As Ratt returned to the store, she was greeted with applause from Cook-Searson and the emergency crews, a touching moment that moved her to tears. In the face of danger, Elaine Ratt exemplified the true essence of heroism, showcasing bravery, selflessness, and unwavering determination in the face of adversity.
